WHO urges rich countries to stop making bilateral deals with manufacturers; Denmark to restrict entry from all countries after today

An ICU nurse at an NHS London hospital has said “our Government failed us” as the capital’s mayor Sadiq Khan declared a “major incident” across the city in the face of soaring Covid-19 cases.

Ameera Sheikh, 28, who is a Unite union representative, said that across the country some of her colleagues “are so burnt out that they can’t eat”.

A lot of people were just about coping in the first wave – because of the way that they were treated, because of what they saw, the trauma, and not being supported well enough by management – they left.

France reported on Friday 19,814 new daily confirmed coronavirus cases, down from 21,703 on Thursday but the number remains far from the government’s target of fewer than 5,000 new daily infections.

The French health ministry also reported 281 deaths in hospitals from COVID-19, up from 277 on Thursday.
