Country’s powerful army has previously threatened to ‘take action’ over alleged fraud in a November election

Myanmar’s army has taken control of the country in an apparent coup and declared a state of emergency, hours after it detained Aung San Suu Kyi and other senior figures from the ruling party.

Military trucks, one carrying barbed wire barriers, were parked outside City Hall in Yangon on Monday morning, while phone and mobile internet to the city, and to capital Naypyitaw, were lost. State-run MRTV television also said it had been unable to broadcast.
