Jane Rowe has been in love with Sam Bale ever since he took her in at the age of seven. Every year on her birthday, she confesses her feelings, only to be rejected as Sam, believing their ten-year age gap is too large, chooses someone else. One night, they get drunk and spend the night together, but Sam has no recollection of it. When Jane becomes pregnant, Sam accuses her of being indecent.
